Facebook was testing the free calling feature in Canada recently. Recent events show that the testing was completed successfully, as they now extend that feature to their US clients also. Facebook said that they were trying to get this messenger application blend with Blackberry and Android Phones. The application is only available in iPhones which has Facebook messenger application in it.
The application is too easy to use. Select a friend from the list. Then you will see a button “i” on the right top. By clicking on it, you will see a button labelled “free call”. The calls can be made only if the person whom you try to get has an iPhone with this application. You can make calls using Wi-Fi or a Data plan. But you can't call a Facebook friend who is logged in through website. This application does not allow users to make calls to PC or to Landlines. The messenger application is limited to voice calls. Video calls are yet to bloom.
The free calling service is not new in the field. Google, Gmail chat, Skype, all have been providing free calls (both audio and video) for past few years. Now Facebook is joining the queue. Reports say that it is a new tactic of the company to make the users use exclusively the company's applications on their mobiles rather than that of their rivals.
There were rumours that Facebook is going to build a phone of its own. But the recent developments show that other than making a phone exclusively by themselves, the company has a tricky plan of changing every phones to “Facebook phones”.
The news about free calling affirms the rumour that Facebook is making a shift in their outlook, from a social network for mere entertainment to a social network that is more useful. The free calling application will be really helpful to those users who are tied up with their limited voice or data plans. The officials were reported affirming that they will be spreading this application to other countries and to other operating systems soon.
Earlier this week, Facebook had come forth with their new search engine, Graph Search, which allows Facebook users to have a more “natural” search on the photos of their friends and also to search people and connections more effectively. As Facebook has introduced this specific feature, we can now expect its upgraded version supporting Video calling and lets cross our fingers that it will reach phones other than the expensive iPhones.
