Yet another Smartphone to confront Samsung- Huawei Ascend Mate. Though it was announced in the CES 2012, its long journey from China makes its launch in India delayed by almost two months. But Huawei hasn't announced the list of countries in which the device will be launching. Huawei Ascend Mate is a 6.1” Smartphone, slightly bigger (nearly 0.6” bigger) than Samsung Galaxy Note 2. The larger screen gives room for a new experience in browsing, gaming and for watching videos.
Design and Build
The 6.1” screen has a capacitive touch screen with corning Gorilla glass. It has a screen resolution of 1280×720 pixels and a dimension of 163.5×85.7×9.9 mm. Though it has a glowing plastic back and a shining body, its larger size makes it tricky to handle. If you are a user with small hands, you better forget one hand usage of the phone. The devise has 163 mm length, 85.7 mm width, 9.9 mm thickness and 198 grams weight.
Display
As the screen size is larger, the resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels will be able to provide you a clearer display. The volume rocker with its both switches, rests just below the unlock button. At the top, you will see a 3.5mm headphone jack and a slot for a microSIM, and on left down, there is slot for a microSD card to supplement the poxy 8GB. Both these slots are covered by plastic panel, which are easy to remove and put back. Once you have unlocked the screen, you will see that you are able to hide the on-screen Android navigation keys so that you will get the entire display area at your exposure.
The big screen with an aspect ratio of 16:9 helps you in watching movies with an ease. As the Ascend Mate has pretty good viewing angles, you can easily accommodate your friends by either sides of you. Typing with one hand is literally a circus as far as Smartphones of these genre are concerned. But Ascend Mate has included one handed key board for those who fancy a challenge in typing. This will be made by a special feature of the device which allows the key board to float in to either right or left side of the phone.
The screen allows multiple applications to be done at the same time. Ascend Mate comes with a special technology from Huawei, known as 'Magic Touch', which allows you to operate the phone with your gloves on. It is a blessing for the westerns when it is winter time.
CPU and Performance
The Huawei Ascend Mate is powered by Quad-core 1.5 GHz Processor with Huawei K3V2 Chipset. It has 2GB RAM. Huawei's own K3V2 chip set is built in this device to reduce the job of the processor and to make the display efficient for astonishing 3D gaming.
Operating System
The Huawei Ascend Mate has the latest Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system.
Camera
The Mate has an 8 MP rear camera with 3264×2448 pixels resolution, auto focusing and 1080p video recording. It has LED flash too. It has pre-built modes such as Panorama, HDR etc. You will need both your hands to press the shutter key. It has a front camera of 1 MP and 720p video recording. Reviewing your picture or video will be a wonderful experience, thanks to the larger screen.
Internet and Connectivity
Ascend Mate comes with a connectivity of dual-band, HSDPA, 42 Mbps; HSUPA, 5.7 Mbps and Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n.
Storage
The device has an in-built storage of 32 GB so that the 2 GB RAM will be very useful for the device not to have any lags while running big sized apps . I t also has microSD slot for expanding its memory.
Battery
Ascend Mates packs the ever biggest battery of Smartphone history. It comes with a huge 4,050mAh battery. It will give you an all day out from house.
Added advantage
The inclusion of Dolby's surround sound technology has made the Mate's sound system improved, which expands the volume of the internal speaker during reducing the level of distortion and it sounds pretty good, even in a crowded room.
Price
Though there are no clear cut announcement regarding the price of the product, it is expected to have a price tag of 30,000/- Indian Rupees. If you are passionate enough to kick off Samsung Galaxies for this larger screen experience, then it is not that a sky high rate.
Verdict
The intention of Huawei behind the production of this enormous phablet is evident- it wants you to get rid of your tablet and switch on to phablet, which is both a tablet and a phone at a time. Whether it is to replace Samsung Galaxies is the question only time can answer as the device is yet to release.
