Canonical Ltd has announced the Ubuntu Edge smartphone, with Ubuntu Mobile OS. This would be most probably a concept device to test the efficiency of the OS and to check how compatible the OS is in a handset.
The phone is meant to be a limited edition one, as the company wants to get the first wave of feed back and then present it before the world with corrected features. As it is a limited edition, the device will be coming with high end materials which are not that widely used in the current smartphone market. As per the promise of the company founder Mark Shuttleworth, the display screen of the phone will be giving priority to colour accuracy than its resolution. So, in short, there will be no need to go behind the ppi.
The build and design of the phone is stylish, of course. The body of the phone has been crafted from a single piece of textured metal. As the name indicates, the precisely chamfered edges of the phone is specially designed for the phone. This will be needed for the edge to edge gestures supported by the Ubuntu Operating System. The phone will be having a display screen of 4.5 inches size. It will be apt for one handed use. But as the company will be giving importance to the colour accuracy than the resolution, we can't predict how far the device can go in the current smartphone market where all the devices are competing each other over resolution and pixel densities.
Instead of Gorilla Glass, the Ubuntu Edge smartphone will be protected by sapphire crystals. As per the claims of the company, nothing smoother than the rough edges of a diamond will not be able to do any scratches or harms to the screen, which gives the phone a nice charm. You can safely keep the phone in tour pocket along with keys and coins.
As we mentioned above, being a limited edition, so many extravaganzas can be expected in the smartphone. It will be having three different operating systems for instance. Other than the Ubuntu Mobile OS, the phone will be running Google's Android and also the full version of the Ubuntu desktop, when it is connected to an external display. So, we can have a safe guess that the device will be having a multi cored processor and a strongly spaced RAM, to say at least 4GB and a huge internal as well as external memory supports.
The camera features of the Ubuntu Edge will also be different from that of the usual smartphones. They will be trying something like the Ultra pixel camera like that of the HTC smartphones. The company has revealed that they will be equipping the camera for low light, quick response and close up shooting. For full speed 4G connectivity, the phone will be having dual LTE antennae.
Don't get that much excited. You have a plenty of time. The device will be making its appearance in 2014 May only. The company needs to raise the fund for the device first. Only after that will they be start working on the product on a mass basis. Lets wait till then.
